Seoul Silver Grass Festival 2026
Is Haneul Park Worth Visiting?

Seoul's Silver Grass Festival turns Haneul Park into one of the city's most atmospheric October destinations. Here is what to expect in 2026, when to go, how to get there, what the crowds are like and whether it deserves a place in your Seoul itinerary.

Haneul Park is one of those Seoul places that makes much more sense when you visit in the right season. For much of the year it is a large elevated park with open views. In autumn, the silver grass changes the entire landscape.

For one week in October, Seoul builds an official festival around that scenery. The 25th Seoul Silver Grass Festival is scheduled for October 17 to 23, 2026, bringing evening lights, performances and experience programs to the park.

The important thing to know is that this is not a festival where you rush between dozens of attractions. Haneul Park itself is the attraction. The best visit is usually a slow one: walk through the fields, catch the changing light, stay for sunset and see what the park feels like after dark.

This guide covers the practical side too, because the park is not directly outside a subway exit. I'll explain the walking, transport, crowds and timing so you can decide whether it is worth using a chunk of your Seoul itinerary on it.

My quick advice: Go in the late afternoon, ideally on a weekday if your schedule allows. Give yourself enough time to reach the top before golden hour, stay through sunset and see the nighttime lighting before heading back down.

The dates, location and basic details worth knowing before you plan the rest of your October itinerary.

Useful details

2026 dates: October 17 to 23, 2026
Location: Haneul Park, World Cup Park, Mapo-gu
Festival edition: 25th Seoul Silver Grass Festival
Best for: silver grass, sunset views, autumn photos and evening atmosphere
Transport: Line 6 plus a substantial walk, or the Maengkkongi electric cart from the Nanjicheon Park parking area

If you are visiting Seoul in the second half of October, the Seoul Silver Grass Festival is one of the easiest seasonal events to build into an autumn itinerary. The festival takes place at Haneul Park, one of the elevated parks inside World Cup Park in western Seoul.

The main attraction is not a stage or a single headline performance. It is the landscape itself. Haneul Park's huge silver grass fields turn pale and feathery in autumn, and the festival adds lighting, photo areas, performances and experience programs around that setting.

That also means you should think of this as a park visit first and a festival second. Comfortable shoes, weather, daylight and crowd timing will affect your experience more than trying to catch every scheduled activity.

2. What Is the Seoul Silver Grass Festival?

A former landfill became one of Seoul's most recognizable autumn landscapes, and the festival is built around that transformation.

Haneul Park sits on what was once part of the Nanjido landfill. The area was transformed as part of the World Cup Park ecological restoration project, and today the hilltop park is known for broad grasslands, open skies and panoramic views across western Seoul.

Seoul's official material describes the silver grass colony as covering roughly 94,000 square meters. When the grass reaches its autumn peak, the entire landscape moves in the wind and changes appearance depending on the light.

The annual festival uses that scenery rather than competing with it. You come for the fields, but the event gives you more reasons to stay through the afternoon and into the evening.

If your idea of a festival is food stalls and constant performances, this one may feel quieter. If you like walking, photography, sunset and seasonal scenery, that quieter format is exactly why it works.

3. What to Expect at the 2026 Festival

The 2026 program adds nighttime scenery, performances and hands-on activities without turning Haneul Park into a conventional fairground.

Night lighting at Haneul Park during the Seoul Silver Grass Festival

Seoul's 2026 festival information includes an opening ceremony, nighttime landscape lighting, photo and sensory zones, busking, experience booths, a resource-recycling market, electric-bus tours and park interpretation programs.

The nighttime lighting is particularly useful because Haneul Park normally feels like a daytime destination. During the festival, staying after sunset gives the same landscape a completely different atmosphere.

I would not build your visit around doing every program. Treat those as extras. The strongest plan is to arrive with enough daylight to walk through the fields, find a viewpoint, watch sunset and then see the illuminated landscape before leaving.

Programs can also be affected by weather or operational changes, so check Seoul's official festival information shortly before your visit if a specific performance or activity matters to you.

4. When Should You Go? Daytime vs Sunset vs Night

The same field can look completely different at 2 PM, golden hour and after the festival lights come on.

Silver grass at Haneul Park during sunset

If you only have one visit, I would choose late afternoon. Bright midday light makes the grass easy to see, but lower afternoon light gives it more texture and warmth. You can then stay through sunset and see the evening lighting without making a second trip.

Daytime is better if photography is not your priority and you want the easiest walking conditions. You can see the paths clearly, take your time and leave before the biggest after-work and sunset crowds.

Sunset is the most photogenic period, which is exactly why it can also be the busiest. Give yourself more time than you think you need. Haneul Park is large, and arriving at the base of the hill shortly before sunset does not mean you are already at the viewpoint.

Night is worth staying for during the festival if you like illuminated landscapes, but I would not arrive only after dark. You would miss the reason Haneul Park is famous in autumn: the silver grass glowing naturally in the changing daylight.

5. How to Get to Haneul Park

The subway part is easy. The important thing is remembering that reaching World Cup Park is not the same as reaching the top of Haneul Park.

Walking path leading through Haneul Park in Seoul

Official festival information points visitors toward World Cup Stadium Station and Mapo-gu Office Station on Line 6. From the subway area, expect a meaningful walk rather than a two-minute station exit to festival entrance.

Seoul's festival guidance estimates roughly 40 minutes on foot depending on your route and starting station. The final approach to Haneul Park also involves gaining elevation.

If you do not want to walk the full way up, the Maengkkongi electric cart operates from the Nanjicheon Park parking area. Availability, queues and operating conditions can change, especially during busy festival periods, so I would not plan an extremely tight schedule around it.

My practical advice

Use public transport, wear shoes you can actually walk in and give yourself extra time before sunset. Seoul specifically recommends public transportation during the festival because traffic around the event can become congested.

6. The Crowds: What You Should Know Before Going

Beautiful autumn weather plus a short festival window means the most photogenic hours can become busy.

Autumn visitors walking through Haneul Park in Seoul

Haneul Park is spacious, so the festival does not necessarily feel like one packed plaza. The pressure points are more predictable: transportation, the uphill approach, popular photo areas and sunset viewpoints.

Weekends are the obvious high-demand choice. If your Seoul schedule is flexible, a weekday visit gives you a better chance of enjoying the paths without constantly waiting for the exact same photo spot as everyone else.

For sunset, arrive well before golden hour rather than trying to time your arrival to the minute. That gives you space to explore and means a transport delay or queue does not cost you the best light.

I would also avoid bringing a rigid itinerary immediately afterward. The park is more enjoyable when you can stay longer if the sunset is good or leave a little later after the lights come on.

7. What Else Can You Do Around Haneul Park?

World Cup Park and nearby Mangwon make it easy to turn the festival into more than a single-photo stop.

Haneul Park is part of the larger World Cup Park system, so you can combine the silver grass with more walking and riverside scenery if you have the energy. The area feels very different from central Seoul neighborhoods packed with shops and cafés.

For food, Mangwon is a useful next stop. If you are already planning to visit Mangwon Market, combining it with Haneul Park keeps your day geographically sensible instead of crossing Seoul several times.

You can use my guide to what to eat at Mangwon Market or the 20,000 won Mangwon Market food crawl to turn the evening into a casual food stop after the park.

If autumn scenery is your main reason for visiting Seoul, also compare this stop with my Seoul autumn foliage guide. Silver grass and fall foliage peak differently, so they do not always look their best on exactly the same week.

8. So, Is the Seoul Silver Grass Festival Actually Worth Visiting?

Yes for the right traveler, but I would not call it an automatic must-do for every first trip to Seoul.

Autumn silver grass landscape at Haneul Park in Seoul

I think it is worth visiting if you are in Seoul during the festival dates and you genuinely like autumn scenery, photography, sunset or long outdoor walks. Haneul Park gives you something visually very different from palaces, shopping streets and café neighborhoods.

I would be less enthusiastic if you have only two or three days in Seoul and your priority list is already packed with major first-time sights. Getting to the park, walking up and actually enjoying it takes a decent block of time.

The festival itself is also not the only reason Haneul Park is worth seeing. If your dates fall just outside October 17 to 23, the park can still be a strong autumn stop when the silver grass is in good condition. You simply will not have the full festival programming.

For a longer October trip, though, I would absolutely consider it. Pair it with another western-Seoul stop, arrive before sunset and let the landscape be the main event.

9. FAQ: Seoul Silver Grass Festival 2026

Is the Seoul Silver Grass Festival free?

Check the current official Seoul festival notice before your visit for any program-specific charges or operating updates. Haneul Park itself is a public park, but this guide does not assume that every festival activity is automatically free.

What are the Seoul Silver Grass Festival 2026 dates?

The 25th Seoul Silver Grass Festival is scheduled for October 17 to 23, 2026 at Haneul Park in World Cup Park, Seoul.

What is the best time to visit Haneul Park?

Late afternoon is the strongest all-round choice because you can see the silver grass in daylight, stay for golden hour and sunset, and then experience the festival's nighttime lighting. Go earlier if avoiding the busiest period matters more than sunset photos.

How do I get to Haneul Park by subway?

Official festival guidance points visitors toward World Cup Stadium Station or Mapo-gu Office Station on Seoul Subway Line 6. From there you still need to walk toward and up Haneul Park, so allow substantially more time than the subway journey alone.

Is Haneul Park difficult to walk?

It is manageable for many visitors, but it is not a flat station-to-attraction walk. Reaching the park involves distance and elevation. The Maengkkongi electric cart can reduce the uphill walking, but queues and operating conditions can vary during busy festival periods.

10. Sources and Planning Notes

Last checked: October 4, 2026.

Festival dates, location and 2026 program information were checked against current Seoul Metropolitan Government and Seoul festival material. Haneul Park background and access information were cross-checked with official Seoul tourism sources.

Festival programs, transport operations and individual activities can change because of weather or operational conditions. Check the official event notice again shortly before visiting if a particular program matters to you.

11. Final Thoughts

Haneul Park is worth visiting in autumn because it gives you a side of Seoul that feels unusually open. Instead of squeezing another shopping street or café neighborhood into your day, you get wind, huge skies and fields that change completely as the light moves.

The Silver Grass Festival makes that experience better if your dates line up. The evening lighting and extra programs give you a reason to stay after sunset, but I would still make the landscape itself the priority.

For a short first trip, I would only add Haneul Park if autumn scenery is genuinely important to you. For a longer October visit, it becomes much easier to recommend, especially if you combine it with Mangwon or another stop in western Seoul.

Go with comfortable shoes, arrive earlier than sunset and leave enough room in your schedule to wander. Haneul Park is much better when it feels like an autumn afternoon rather than an attraction you have thirty minutes to finish.
