1. Yes, the Restaurant Is Literally Inside a Train

The setting was easily the most memorable part of my visit, and the restaurant makes much more sense once you see where it is.

The reason I wanted to try Express Nowon by Mirage was pretty straightforward: the restaurant is inside a train. Not a restaurant with a few train decorations on the wall, and not a normal building trying to look vaguely railway-themed. You walk up to what looks like an actual train sitting beside the tracks at Hwarangdae Railroad Park and go inside to eat.

That immediately makes the arrival more interesting than the average restaurant visit. Before I had even eaten anything, I was taking photos of the exterior, the train itself and the railway surroundings. It feels less like going somewhere solely for dinner and more like adding a meal to a small railway-themed outing.

Inside, the restaurant continues the train concept with a much more polished and old-fashioned look. The narrow shape of the carriage, darker interior details and seating make the space feel noticeably different from eating in a conventional restaurant. For me, that atmosphere ended up being more memorable than anything I ordered.

That distinction matters if you are deciding whether it is worth traveling across Seoul for. I would come here because you want to see the train, take pictures and explore Hwarangdae Railroad Park. I would not personally make the trip solely because I was craving the food.

2. The Location Is Part of the Experience

Express Nowon sits inside Hwarangdae Railroad Park, so the train theme continues well beyond the restaurant itself.

One of the best things about this restaurant is that the train is not randomly sitting in the middle of an unrelated neighborhood. Express Nowon is inside Hwarangdae Railroad Park in Gongneung, Nowon-gu, an area built around the preserved railway landscape of the former Hwarangdae Station.

The history makes the surroundings much more interesting. The old Hwarangdae Station building dates back to 1939, when it originally opened as Taereung Station with the Gyeongchun Line. It was renamed Hwarangdae Station in 1958. After regular railway service eventually disappeared from this section, the former station and tracks were preserved as part of the park and the wider Gyeongchun Line Forest Trail.

You can still see railway tracks and trains around the park, so I would leave some time before or after eating to walk around rather than treating the restaurant as an isolated reservation. That is especially true if you are coming from another part of Seoul. The restaurant itself is only one part of what makes the journey out here interesting.

The park also helps explain why there are so many families and children around. This is not the kind of restaurant location I would choose if I wanted an extremely quiet, intimate dinner. The wider area has railway attractions and spaces that naturally appeal to families, and that atmosphere carries into the restaurant.

3. We Walked In, Registered and Waited About 10 Minutes

My own wait was easy, but I would not assume every visit will be equally quick.

I did not have some complicated reservation strategy for my visit. We walked in, registered for a table and ended up waiting only around 10 minutes before getting seated. For somewhere with such an unusual concept, that was much easier than I had expected.

I would still treat that as my experience rather than a promise about your wait. A train carriage has an obvious physical limit on how much seating it can contain, and the surrounding park attracts families and weekend visitors. A quiet weekday and a busy weekend afternoon can be completely different situations.

If there is a wait when you arrive, I would not necessarily see that as wasted time. Register first, then use the waiting period to look around the railway park and take exterior photos. That makes much more sense here than standing directly outside the restaurant for half an hour staring at your phone.

4. The Interior Looks Great, but Do Not Expect a Quiet Train Ride

The carriage is photogenic, but this is a family-heavy location and it can feel lively inside.

Visually, I liked the inside. The whole point is to make eating inside the carriage feel more special than sitting in a regular restaurant, and I think the interior succeeds at that. The train shape itself already gives the room character, while the darker, more classic styling makes photos look much more dramatic than the average casual restaurant.

What I would manage expectations about is the noise. There were a lot of children around when I visited. That makes complete sense once you consider that you are eating inside a train in a railway park with family-oriented attractions nearby, but it can still catch you off guard if the photos online made you imagine a quiet, elegant European-train dinner.

Children were being children, so there was noise and crying at points. I do not think that makes the restaurant bad. It simply means I would choose it for the novelty and setting rather than for a calm date where conversation and atmosphere need to be perfectly quiet. Families may actually find the location particularly convenient because the restaurant fits naturally into a day at the park.

For couples or friends coming mainly for photos, I would probably avoid the busiest family hours if possible. You cannot control who else is there, but going at a less obvious meal rush gives you a better chance of enjoying the interior without the carriage feeling quite as busy.

5. The Photo Seat Is the Main Reason I Would Come Back

There is one particularly good seat for pictures, and importantly, it is a photo spot rather than someone's dining table.

This was probably the most useful thing I learned from actually visiting: there is one seat that I think is especially good for getting the train-restaurant photo. It looks like somewhere you might worry another customer will occupy for their entire meal, but it is used as a photo spot rather than a normal dining table.

That changes the experience quite a lot. I would have been annoyed if the restaurant's most photogenic setup depended entirely on getting lucky with your assigned table. Instead, you can actually go over and take your photos without needing to be seated there for dinner.

There is a tradeoff, though. It is essentially one main photo seat, not an entire carriage where every angle gives you the exact same dramatic picture. If you are coming because you saw a very specific train-seat photo online, keep that in mind. You may have to wait your turn for that particular setup.

This is genuinely the part that would bring me back. I would not return specifically because I need to eat the same meal again, but I can absolutely imagine coming back dressed for photos, getting the train pictures I want and spending more time around the park.

6. What We Ordered

We had katsudon, truffle pasta and mushroom soup, but the food was not the strongest part of the visit for me.

Our table had katsudon, truffle pasta and mushroom soup. Visually, everything fit the restaurant nicely. The plates, cutlery and food presentation worked with the more polished train interior, and having several dishes on the table definitely made the whole setup more photogenic.

Taste-wise, though, my overall reaction was much less exciting. The food was mid to me. Nothing about the meal was disastrous, but there also was not a dish that made me think I needed to return and order it again. Once the novelty of eating inside a train was removed, the meal itself was not what stayed in my head afterward.

This is obviously a personal food opinion rather than a statement that everyone will dislike it. Someone else may enjoy the menu much more than I did. But when I decide whether I would revisit a restaurant, I care about what would actually motivate me to make the trip again. Here, that motivation would be the location and photos, not a craving for the food.

That is also why I would not tell someone to cross Seoul solely because they are looking for an amazing pasta or katsudon dinner. There are too many restaurants in Seoul for that to be useful advice. Express Nowon makes more sense when the meal is one piece of a larger Hwarangdae Railroad Park visit.

7. The Katsudon

It gave me another good food photo, but it did not change my overall opinion of the meal.

The katsudon was one of the dishes I photographed most because cutting into it gives you a much more interesting shot than simply photographing a plate untouched. If you are documenting the meal, this is one of those moments where the food works nicely with the setting.

As food, however, it still landed in the same general category as the rest of my meal. I ate it, it was fine, and I did not leave thinking about when I could have it again. I would rather be straightforward about that than turn every visually interesting restaurant into a food recommendation.

If your priority is having an unusual lunch while exploring the park, that may be completely enough. Not every meal needs to be one of the best things you have ever eaten. I just think visitors should know what I personally found strongest here, and it was clearly the experience rather than the flavor.

8. The Truffle Pasta and Mushroom Soup

These completed the meal, but neither became a reason for me to recommend the restaurant primarily for its food.

We also had the truffle pasta and mushroom soup. Together with the katsudon, they made the table feel like a proper sit-down meal rather than us going inside purely to take pictures and leave.

My opinion stayed basically the same after trying everything. The meal was acceptable, but the food never overtook the setting. I was much more interested in the fact that I was sitting inside a train, what the carriage looked like and what I could photograph than I was in any particular flavor on the table.

If I returned, I would probably approach the menu differently. Rather than ordering several things because I wanted a big restaurant experience, I would choose whatever sounded good enough that day and treat it as part of the outing. My expectations would be centered on enjoying the location, not discovering a new favorite Seoul restaurant.

9. Who I Think This Restaurant Actually Makes Sense For

The answer changes a lot depending on whether you care about food, trains, photos or visiting with children.

I think Express Nowon makes the most sense for people who care about the concept. If you like unusual restaurants, railway settings or taking photos somewhere that does not look like every other Seoul restaurant, there is a real reason to come. The fact that the train sits inside an actual railway park gives the concept much more depth than a themed interior alone would have.

It also makes obvious sense for families with children who are already visiting Hwarangdae Railroad Park. In that situation, you are not making a separate journey just for a meal. You can look at trains, explore the park and then continue the theme by eating inside one.

For couples and friends, I think it works better as a photo outing than a serious food date. Dress in something you actually want pictures in, give yourself time to walk around outside and do not rush straight home after paying the bill. Otherwise you are ignoring the part of the location that I found most worthwhile.

If you are a tourist with only a few days in Seoul, I would be more selective. Hwarangdae is outside the central tourist neighborhoods, so I would come because the railway park itself interests you, not because you feel like every unusual restaurant in Seoul needs to be squeezed into your itinerary.

10. Would I Come Back?

Yes, but my reason for returning says almost everything about how I feel about this place.

I would come back, but probably not because I was hungry.

I would come back for photos. I like the train exterior, I like the railway surroundings, and I especially like knowing that the main photo seat is there for people to actually use for pictures. I could easily see myself returning with a different outfit and treating the restaurant and park as a photography destination.

I would also explore more of the surrounding area next time. The preserved tracks and old Hwarangdae Station give you something to do beyond walking into a restaurant, eating and immediately getting back on the subway. That makes a repeat visit easier to justify.

But if someone asked whether I would come all the way back because I was craving the food, my answer would be no. For me, this is one of those Seoul places where the setting wins. Once you know that before visiting, I actually think it becomes easier to enjoy it for what it does well.
